Membership Committee

Description

This committee is charged with increasing participation in the CNNC. Initiatives have included obtaining in-kind donations from local businesses for member perks, creating a new resident’s packet, and following-up with residents on how they can get involved.

For over 30 years the Membership Committee has worked steadily to build membership in CNNC, increase participation and develop leadership in our neighborhood, connect neighbors to working CNNC committees and issues of importance, and welcome new residents.

The backbone of the work is our nuts-and-bolts outreach. We coordinate the hand delivery of 1700 CNNC newsletters to our neighbors every month by Central Northside residents to keep them abreast of meetings and upcoming issues. We regularly recruit new residents to take on the task of distributing the newsletters to the neighbors block by block.

We organize the annual Membership Drive, producing and distributing a flyer describing the work of each of CNNC’s committees, contact persons, and meeting dates. This past year’s included a Survey of Priorities of Issues, upon which we base our educational speakers at monthly General Membership Meetings and development of new working committees. We also use this packet as a welcoming tool for new residents.

We currently have more than 400 dues-paying members. We actively use this list to connect people and their interests to existing CNNC activities; draw upon people’s specific skills and identify potential residents for CNNC leadership roles.

On the social front, neighbors look forward to our annual Thanksgiving Dinner (now in its 35th year!) with tasty Thanksgiving staples donated by local organizations and businesses and the sharing of their favorite covered dish. Over 100 residents attend to eat, enjoy local entertainment and get to know their neighbors.

In the past few years, we’ve initiated more social ‘meet ‘n greet’ events in an effort to draw our diverse neighborhood together for fun and sharing of concerns. We organized an October Fall Harvest Meet ‘n Greet in our local Tot Lot located in the heart of the neighborhood with pumpkin carving, music and refreshments. Our Summer Street Fest draws over 100 neighborhood families for reggae, burgers, face painting and outreach about CNNC’s work.

This year, we are planning a Spring Festival along with these other events to break the winter shut-in spell and get together as a community. We cannot underestimate the impact of these events in drawing people together and increasing their participation.

In order to hone in on specific issues of interest in our neighborhood, this year we are organizing several education forums. Our first event is a forum on jobs and the economy coupled with a job fair to both aid our unemployed neighbors as well as reach out to people who might not already be involved.

The CNNC currently has 194 members.
