Fundraiser for Bistro to Go employee Chef Alfredo

From Northside Leadership Conference: Please help get the word out on this benefit fundraiser.

Chef Alfredo moved to Pittsburgh from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. He landed in Northside, found an apartment in Historic Deutschtown and became a dapper and gentlemanly fixture as a chef at Bistro To Go, making jambalaya and other southern specialties.

On May 17 he was involved in a horrific car accident, suffering very serious injuries. He faces a long recovery and of course is unable to work. A benefit is planned for Sunday July 19 at Bistro To Go. Although he’s been a Northsider only a short time, he chose this community as his new home late in life. Let’s show how Northsiders take care of their own, even adopted ones.

Tickets are only $20 and larger donations are welcome.

Tickets purchased by July 12 get you entered in a special drawing, so don’t wait. Make your plans now for July 19!

Extreme Scribbling at moxie DaDA gallery this Saturday June 20

Have you HEARD of EXTREME SCRIBBLING? HAVE YOU? I mean what is it? Who does it and what do they do it on? Connie Cantor has truly lost her marbles with this idea… she intends to challenge you to make your mark, marks and remarks at her mark making event of the year! The first-ever (well, for Pittsburgh at least) “Extreme Scribbling” is being held SATURDAY, JUNE 20 @ 7 PM.

Connie plans on creating teams of scribblers who will rise to the challenge of good, clean?, just for the hell of it, FUN. or well, for the TROPHY… or some prizes donated by Artist and Craftsmen Supply or a chance to be on YouTube. There are 4 games planned: “Eraser Wars”, “Jerks On Paper”, “Scribble Couture”, and “Race For the Curator”; with a special “Buddy Draw” during halftime. I will not explain these games here, you’ll have to attend to participate or simply watch! There will be refreshments available. Due to the themes of some of the events, and the mere presence of Captain Mayhem, we ask that this event be attended by those 15 and older only.

WHY IS SHE DOING IT? Connie’s exhibit explores her unconscious thought put to paper… her squiggles, scrapes and countless marks come together to produce large scale abstract works. Those familiar with her previous work will find it difficult to recognize her new works… her ability to create fearlessly and without fore planning has enabled Cantor to produce a unique, compelling body of work for her exhibit “scribbling for dummies”.

This event also “marks” the closing of Connie’s exhibit “Scribbling For Dummies”, so if you have not made it to see her unique take on mark-making, please plan on attending! The gallery will be open for viewing Friday from 4:00-7:00pm and Saturday 12:00-6:00pm.

Pa. Abandoned and Blighted Properties Act

Hello Everyone,

This past Monday I gave a brief presentation at the CNNC general membership meeting about the newly enacted Pa legislation entitled the “Abandoned and Blighted Property Conservatorship Act”. The act, which became law in February 09, is designed to give communities greater power to bring abandoned properties in line with community codes and standards.

The act  would allow courts to appoint conservators with the power to rehabilitate and restore qualifying blighted properties 96those that have been abandoned, are in violation of community codes, and have not been on the market for a specified time period, among other requirements. The CNNC is considering ways to take advantage of this powerful legislation to better the central north side.

Many of the blighted properties in our neighborhoods can be rehabilitated and provide viable and affordable housing. We have a great deal of work ahead of us but the end result will be worth it. As we move forward we will be seeking potential investors, contractors and purchasers of the rehabilitated properties. I have attached a link to the legislation and have other articles that I can forward to those interested in this issue.

There will be more to come. When Julie gets back from holiday we will make all
information available on the CNNC website.

Thanks for your time.

City of Asylum/Pittsburgh Chuck Kinder Reading

City of Asylum/Pittsburgh is proud to present a reading from Honeymooners: A Cautionary Tale, by Chuck Kiinder, to celebrate its re-issue by Carnegie Mellon Press.

City of Asylum/Pittsburgh is in the process of converting the former Manteca Bar and several adjacent properties to a literary center. We may hold the reading there, so this would be a chance to see the place in its original “vintage” condition.
