Neighborhood CleanUp and Planting- This Saturday May 9, 2009

Is it already that time again? Yes! This Saturday, May 9 at 10:00AM we will meet to plant some beautiful annuals and pick up litter throughout the neighborhood. Volunteers are asked to meet at Mechanic’s Retreat Park, located on the corner of Buena Vista Street and Jacksonia Street. Coffee and breakfast treats will be provided along with gloves and bags. If you can give 15 minutes or a couple of hours, we can use you. Even 15 minutes can make a noticeable impact.

Thanks to all who came out for the Earth Day CleanUp. We collected over 40 bags of litter and leaves. Laura Winter expressed an interest in the leaves for the Children’s Garden for compost and mulch and I was pleased that we were able to transport and spread almost 20 large bag’s in their lot beside the Community Garden. Also, it is exciting to see that the amount of litter around the neighborhood has decreased from previous years. This is great news.

If you know of any special projects, vacant lots, or illegal dumping that should be tackled in future clean up days, please email me with the details.

2009 NSLC Annual Dinner

The Northside Leadership Conference Annual Awards Dinner will be held on June 11, 2009 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on North Avenue. The Dinner is a celebration for residents and community leaders on the Northside. This celebration commemorates the accomplishments in economic and residential development, and neighborhood planning which occurred in the Northside throughout the year.

The purpose of the dinner is to honor neighborhood leaders who have made significant contributions to their communities. Each of the 15 NSLC member groups selects an individual they wish to recognize. In addition, the Conference joins with corporate sponsors to award $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors in recognition of their volunteer activity.

Special thanks to all of our sponsors who make this event possible and to the members of the dinner committee. If you would like more information about the NSLC Annual Dinner, email Kelly MacKay.
